What songs/riffs to play at guitar center/shop?

What songs are good to test out guitars, I play rock/metal. But also songs where I wont get shit for lol.

You’re testing out the guitar, you’re not playing to show everyone within ear shot how hot you are, because believe me, there’s always someone better.

Play the strings at each fret…check for buzzes..etc.

Check the harmonics at the 12th fret…does it sound in tune with the open string, the note held at the 12th fret and the harmonic at the 12th?

Play some chords….all up and down the neck.

Bend some notes to make sure it doesn’t fret out.

Check the neck to body joint to make sure the fit is snug.

Look down the neck to check straightness..a little bow is ok and sometimes desirable.

Check all volume and tone pots and tuning keys.

Check for cracks and flaws..especially around the bridge area….small burrs on the bridge saddles, etc.

Unplugged, put your ear against the body of the guitar while you play, to check for sustain. Some guitars, of the exact same model, will sustain more.

Rub your hand up and down the neck to check for fret ends that may be rough, or not smoothed properly. (Usually not a problem on better guitars)

Finally…plug it in and play it clean for a while…no effects…no distortion.

Some guitars just seem to speak to you…do not discount this feeling. It might be saying “take me home, I’m the one.” Call it magic, or whatever.

Finally..if you want to rip off some metal licks…go for it, but you have to show the store owner, salesperson.. you’re a serious buyer by doing a serious visual check of the guitar and going through everything mentioned above, and not just someone who wants to wail away on a guitar for the hell of it.
